Security Guard Training



Security Guard Training Program (40 hours)

Through our partnership with Centre for Security Training and Management Inc (CSTMI) we offer the 40 hour Security Guard Training Program mandated by the Ontario Private Security and Investigative Service Act.   This newly created mandatory course covers the requirements for becoming a licenced security guard in the Province of Ontario.  The following topics will be covered by subject matter experts:
Section 1 - Introduction to the Security Industry
Section 2 - The Private Security and Investigative Services Act and Ministry Code of Conduct
Section 3 - Basic Security Procedures
Section 4 - Report Writing
Section 5 - Health and Safety
Section 6 - Emergency Response Preparation
Section 7 - Canadian Legal System
Section 8 - Legal Authorities
Section 9 - Effective Communications
Section 10 - Sensitivity Training
Section 11 - Use of Force Theory
Section 12 - Emergency Level First Aid

Security Guard Training Program Prep/Test (16 hours)

This two-day course (16 hours) is designed to prepare seasoned guards that are currently licenced to write their Ministry test.  Topics to be covered by subject matter experts include:

  • Introduction to the Security Industry
  • The Private Security & Investigative Services Act of Ontario
  • Security Procedures
  • Criminal Code of Canada
  • Trespass to Property Act of Ontario
  • Liquor Licence Act of Ontario
  • Tort Law
  • Canadian Legal Systems
  • Use of Force

 

Canadian General Standards Board – Security Guard Program (5 weeks)
This is a Referral Employment Program
Learn through lectures, role playing, hands-on practice, and simulations from instructors who are retired police officers and experts in their respective fields.  Through our partnership with Centre for Security Training and Management Inc (CSTMI), the curriculum is certified by the federal Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB).  The course includes instruction in life skills, interview skills, job searching, and job retention.  Job placement is assured for those participants who successfully complete the course.  At the end of the program, graduates will have the skills and abilities to pursue an entry-level position as a security officer or an undercover loss prevention officer.

Subjects Include:
Arrest procedures, access control, first aid & CPR, closed-circuit television cameras, handcuffing, use of force, fire safety, radio communications, WHMIS, report writing, public relations, traffic direction, and the Trespass to Property Act.   

This five week course includes the mandatory curriculum required in the PSISA – Security Guard Training Program. 

Course Requirements:
Prior to being accepted into the five week program, registrants must first:

1. Provide a current criminal record check, free of criminal convictions and/or outstanding matters, such as provincial fines that are before the courts
2. Provide three pieces of government-issued identification.  This is a requirement to obtaining a Security Officer license in Ontario
3. Clients must acknowledge and agree that work placement may include the necessity to work shift work including days, afternoons, nights, weekends and holidays.
4. Clients must be able to work anywhere in the Ottawa and surrounding area.
5. Clients must be in good physical condition with the ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.

Application Instructions:
Applicants must first complete an application form and go through a pre-screening process which may involve an interview.   The Skill Training Referral Form (application form) can be obtained by calling the STSD Inc. Training Office.  Applicants should include a personal resume with the application form.  If you are not a Canadian citizen, a valid work permit and landing papers/notice of decision/permanent resident card is required.   The application takes about 45 minutes to complete.  The interview takes approximately 15 minutes.
